SATAN’S ATTACK ON CHRIST, PART 1

ONE OF SATAN’S CHIEF REASONS for attacking Israel was to try to prevent his Archenemy, Jesus, from ever being born. God’s Holy Word contains infallible proof that Jesus Christ is who He said He is. The scriptures prophesy continually of the Messiah, when He would come, where He would come, the line from which He would come, etc. There are 333 definite prophecies in the Old Testament that clearly point to the Messiah. If even one of these prophecies failed, it would negate every one of them.

Satan knows these prophecies. He has known since the judgment at the Garden of Eden that One was coming who would defeat him and bruise his head. He has had knowledge of the Word of God down through the ages. The enmity that God pronounced between Satan and the seed of woman dates from Eden and has never diminished. It will continue until all spiritual warfare is ended and Satan meets his final end.

Since that first prophecy of a promised Redeemer in Genesis 3:15, there have been many more prophecies of the Messiah, and there have been many attacks on the Word of God seeking to negate those prophecies. Satan sought to kill the Messiah before He was ever born by preventing His coming in the way and manner prophesied. Satan launched one of his most determined attacks upon the lineage of the Messiah which God prophesied, attacking the prophecies which prove beyond a doubt that Jesus is the promised Messiah. If only Satan could make one word of God to fail, he would win. But he could not.

This attack on the line of Christ was launched in the very beginning, with the sons of Adam as the targets, when one son, Cain, killed the other, Abel. You can easily see the conflict here between good and evil. Abel was righteous (see Hebrews 11:4). Cain was of the “wicked one,” or the devil (see 1 John 3:12). The result was Satan’s attempt, through Cain, to wipe out the godly line to eliminate the Seed of woman which had been promised.

And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him (Genesis 4:8).

Satan could have eliminated the progeny of Adam altogether; the battle would have been over right then and there. However, God raised up additional seed of the first family. With the birth of Seth came the re-establishment of the godly line.

The events surrounding the murder of Abel vividly depict the continuing attack of Satan on the godly line through which the Messiah was promised. If Satan could wipe out the line at any period in history, the victory would be his. On several occasions, he seemed for a time to have succeeded, yet God never lost control. He moved in marvelous and amazing ways to show His Word true and to preserve the godly seed from extinction.
